Redwood Park Academy

Wider World

Wider World is a bespoke subject for Key Stage 4 pupils at Redwood Park Academy which is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the wider world around them, their role in society, citizenship and understanding of British Values.

It is based on the National Curriculum for Citizenship (KS3) and Citizenship-based education bodies such as ACT. It is also strongly linked to national and international events and current affairs.

Wider World is designed to increase pupil knowledge and understanding of important issues that affect them such as discrimination, financial safety, conflict and health.

It links to our school values. We want our pupils to care for themselves and the world around them, be courageous in their choices and interests and challenge themselves to be active citizens.

Wider World

Portsmouth is a city with chronic deprivation, with most of our pupils living in the top 10% of deprived areas in England. As a school, we believe that this should not be a barrier to our pupils engaging in their communities, country and the world.

Wider World is context to develop pupils’ EHCP targets but is also a vehicle to develop communication, social and academic skills. It is about developing a sense of curiosity and instilling a love of learning, now and into their futures.
